Exeter City Among League One Clubs Chasing Cardiff City Loanee

League One outfit Exeter City are one of the clubs believed to be interested in Cardiff City loanee Joel Colwill, who is currently on loan at Cheltenham Town

According to journalist Darren Witcoop, the Grecians are among the sides who are reportedly interested in the 20-year-old, who has impressed on loan at League Two side Cheltenham.

Colwill’s Loan Success

Since joining the Robins in early August, the Welsh Under-21 international has enjoyed a loan spell under Michael Flynn. Colwill has provided nine goal contributions in 24 games in all competitions in red and white this season.

Although Cheltenham’s season started slowly, the 20-year-old has helped the club pick up the pace in both the league and cups and even scored a brace against League One side Rotherham United in a 3-1 win over the Millers in the first round of the FA Cup.

Cardiff City’s Decision

Joel Colwill is a name that is well-known by most City fans. His older brother, Rubin Colwill, is a player who has also made it through their academy and into their first team and shone, and they will be hoping for the same fate with Joel.

The question for Cardiff will be whether or not the club recall the 20-year-old and loans him to a League One side, or whether they will keep him where he is, in the hope that he still gets consistent minutes under Flynn, a manager known for developing young talents.

Colwill certainly seems to not be short of suitors, and it’s no wonder given his impressive half-a season at Cheltenham.

A Potential Big Blow To Cheltenham’s Season

Although it might not seem like it given their poor start to life back in League Two, the Robins are currently only five points away from the playoffs and are an outside shout at bouncing back at the first time of asking.

However, this relies on a few things, and if they lose one of their star players it will certainly be a big blow for Flynn and his side.

Writer’s View

The Welshman seems more than ready for League One if not Championship football. He has proved time and time again in a Cheltenham shirt that he is one of the best technical players on the pitch, and he has the goals and assists to back this point up. Although Colwill is guaranteed minutes at League Two level, a loan spell to a higher league to test his ability would be beneficial for a player such as himself.
