Barnsley Boss Delivers Firm Squad Message As Winless Run Continues

Barnsley head coach Darrell Clarke has vowed to take a ruthless approach to shake up his squad following a disappointing defeat to Birmingham City, extending the Reds’ winless run to six matches.

Despite a promising start to the match, Clarke was highly critical of his side’s performance in the final 30 minutes and questioned the mentality of some players as he looks to make changes ahead of the January transfer window.

Clarke’s Harsh Words for His Players

Barnsley controlled much of the game for the first 58 minutes, but after that, they struggled to maintain their performance, allowing Birmingham to capitalise. Clarke was deeply frustrated with his team’s inability to manage the game, particularly after losing captain Marc Roberts to injury.

“We had a player who came on in that slot to do that job who did not do it. Then we don’t mark at the back stick for the second goal. It’s players not doing their jobs, and that’s unacceptable because that’s what cost us a point at the end of the day.”

Clarke also stressed the importance of accountability and discipline, stating that he is already assessing which players to trust going forward. He made it clear that he will not hesitate to make tough decisions if he feels certain players are not living up to the standards required to improve the team’s fortunes.

“I am always judging players. I already know deep down, if I am honest with you, which players to trust going forward. When I come to that, I am ruthless.”

January Transfer Window on the Horizon

With the January transfer window approaching, Clarke’s comments served as a stern warning to his players. He acknowledged the need for strengthening in certain areas and hinted that he could look to make moves in the market if necessary.

Clarke also noted the impact of referee Thomas Parsons, who came in for criticism from the Barnsley supporters, but was keen not to dwell on the officiating. The fans had voiced their displeasure with boos at both half-time and the final whistle, and Clarke stated that he had little to say on the matter, suggesting that the referee’s performance could be better left unmentioned.

Writer’s View

Clarke’s comments highlight the pressure Barnsley are under as they try to end their winless run and improve their position in the league. His ‘ruthless’ approach could prove to be just what the team needs, as it sends a clear message that underperforming players will not be tolerated.
