Hull City Should Consider Former Sunderland Boss Says Pundit

Hull City’s search for a new manager continues after the dismissal of Tim Walter, and Alex Neil should be considered as a serious contender.

Former player and pundit David Prutton has backed Neil as a smart choice for the Tigers, who find themselves in a precarious position near the foot of the Championship table.

Walter’s Exit and Hull’s Struggles

Tim Walter was relieved of his duties following a defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, marking the club’s fifth consecutive loss. Hull City currently sit in the bottom three of the Championship, separated from last place only by goal difference. A ten-game winless run has heightened the urgency for a managerial appointment capable of stabilising the team.

Owner Acun Ilicali is reportedly considering several candidates, including Mark Robins and Slavisa Jokanovic. However, Alex Neil’s name has been floated as a credible and potentially transformative option.

Prutton Advocates for Alex Neil

Neil, who previously managed Hamilton Academical, Norwich City, and Sunderland, has a proven track record of achieving promotion. Out of work since his departure from Stoke City nearly a year ago, the Scotsman is seen as an experienced figure who could bring stability to Hull’s struggling side.

“He’s got an incredibly quick and incisive way of summing up what he’s seen. He doesn’t suffer fools, is very committed in his decision-making, and understands how he wants to play football,” Prutton said on the 1904 Club podcast. “I think he would be an extremely serviceable option for Hull City to get someone like him in because the first port of call now is some form of consolidation and balance.”

Prutton highlighted Neil’s tactical acumen and ability to manage the pressures of football management, calling him a pragmatic and focused leader.

What’s Next for Hull City?

With the club’s survival in the Championship hanging in the balance, Ilicali’s decision on the next manager could define Hull’s season. While Neil has a solid reputation, Hull must weigh their options carefully to ensure the right fit for the squad and their long-term ambitions.

Time is of the essence, and with the January transfer window approaching, appointing a manager capable of immediate impact will be crucial for the Tigers’ bid to avoid relegation.

Writer’s View

Alex Neil represents a blend of experience and pragmatism that Hull City desperately need in their current predicament. His ability to instill discipline and clarity in a squad could help stabilize the Tigers and lay the groundwork for future progress. However, with competition for the role and the weight of expectation, Hull must act decisively to bring in the right leadership before it’s too late.
