Former Norwich City player and Colchester United assistant manager Ian Culverhouse has been appointed as the new manager of National League South side St Albans City.
Culverhouse, who stepped down as Boston United manager in October, takes on the challenge of lifting the Saints from their current struggles in the league.
Promising Start for Culverhouse
The Bishop’s Stortford-born coach began his tenure with a commendable 1-1 draw against George Elokobi’s Maidstone United. Despite the Saints’ precarious position, Culverhouse believes the performance offers a solid foundation to build upon. The point earned in his debut match underscores the team’s potential to improve under his guidance.
“We’re here to get out of the little bit of a mess we’re in, a little bit of a hole, and then we’ll progress and go on to better things. Especially in the second half, we were magnificent… That shows character. It’s a small step, but hopefully this is a step forward,” said Culverhouse.
He also highlighted the need to rebuild confidence within the squad, stating that the team has three training sessions this week to prepare for their next fixture against Boreham Wood.
A Wealth of Experience
Culverhouse brings a wealth of experience to St Albans, both as a player and manager. A former defender, he enjoyed a notable playing career with clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City. He later transitioned into coaching, forming a successful partnership with Paul Lambert at Colchester United, Norwich City, and Aston Villa.
His managerial career has seen him take charge of teams including King’s Lynn, Grantham Town, and Kettering Town. Now at St Albans, Culverhouse faces the task of stabilising the club and steering them up the National League South standings.
Writer’s View
Culverhouse’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for St Albans City. His vast experience and proven ability to instil confidence in struggling teams make him a promising choice for the Saints. The early signs from the draw against Maidstone United suggest that Culverhouse’s methods are already having an impact. If he can continue to build momentum, St Albans might just turn their season around under his leadership.
