Boston United Appoint Ex-Newport County Man As New Boss

National League side Boston United have appointed Graham Coughlan as the manager of the club.

The Pilgrims have struggled since being promoted from the National League North via the play-offs and are currently 23rd. They opted to sack Ian Culverhouse last month as a result of the poor performances and have finally found their man in Coughlan.

50-Year-Old Mounts Return

The manager has been out of football since being dismissed by Newport County in June of this year, with The Exiles opting to go with Nelson Jardim to lead them in League Two.

The former Mansfield Town and Bristol Rovers boss had a 35% win rate at Rodney Parade and guided them to a somewhat disappointing 18th-place finish last season.

The club’s announcement of the Irishman said (Quotes via Plymouth Live):

“Graham, who turned 50 on Monday, has extensive managerial experience in the EFL with the likes of Bristol Rovers, Mansfield Town and Newport County – as well as a developmental role at Sheffield United.

“Following a thorough three-week recruitment process, the Pilgrims have opted for the Irishman to become the club’s new manager as they seek to retain the National League status earned in May. He assumes immediate control of first team affairs at the Jakemans Community Stadium, as preparations continue for the visit of Braintree Town on Saturday.”

Writer’s View

Boston United have finally made their move to find a replacement for Ian Culverhouse and Graham Coughlan is the choice they have made. He does have plenty of EFL experience and did guide Newport away from relegation whilst the club were in a tricky spot. He is entering a similar situation in Lincolnshire now and a step down to Boston United should work for him but time will tell if he can steer The Pilgrims to safety in their first season in the National League.
