Stoke City Linked With £1.7m Defender Transfer

Stoke City are reported to be interested in a January move for Brazilian centre-back Rodrigo Guth by a German media outlet.

The 24-year-old currently plays for Eredivisie side Fortuna Sittard, who he joined in 2022 from Atalanta in the Serie A. He has played 12 games for the club so far this season in the Dutch top-flight, scoring once and keeping six clean sheets so far.

Potters Face European Competition For Signature

According to German media outlet Fussball Europa, who cover European football, Stoke City are considering a move for Guth in the January transfer window, with a reported transfer figure of €2 million (£1.66 million). They also face competition from European regulars in Ferencvaros of Hungary and Greek Super League side Panathinaikos also named as interested parties.

Narcis Pelach’s side are currently 14th in the Championship this season and have conceded 20 goals and recorded five clean sheets in their 17 second-tier fixtures. The Spanish head coach has opted to stick with a defensive duo of Ashley Phillips and Ben Gibson since arriving from Norwich City.

Guth is under contract in the Netherlands until 2027 but has previously downplayed his ambition to play to move to one of the Eredivisie’s bigger sides in a previous interview.

Writer’s View

Rodrigo Guth seems to be one of the better defenders currently in the Netherlands with his Fortuna Sittard side looking like outside challengers for European football. The club have gradually improved since rejoining the top flight and naturally that will get clubs looking at their players. Stoke City would be somewhat of a left-field choice for him but there will be ample opportunities for him there and could be a possible stepping stone to reach the Premier League. With Ashley Phillips returning to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season, there will definitely be a starting place up for grabs on The Potters’ team sheet in the near future.
