Coventry City have confirmed they will benefit from any future sale by Sporting Lisbon on striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Swedish international left The Sky Blues in July 2023 for Portugal as the club narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League, with Luton Town beating them on penalties in the playoff final. It was rumoured Sporting paid a club record fee of €20 million with additional bonuses.
King Confirms Clause
Speaking to TalkSPORT, Coventry’s chair Doug King confirmed that the club do have a sell-on clause in the deal that took Gyokeres abroad and that some of the fee will go to Brighton and Hove Albion, who he played for prior to City purchasing him. Portuguese outlet A Bola had previously reported at the time that the Sky Blues had between a 10 to 15% sell-on clause.
The striker has become one of the hottest transfer targets over the past 6 months, with Arsenal rumoured to be targeting him to strengthen their forward line. Manchester United are also heavily linked to the 26-year-old, alongside PSG and Barcelona in Europe.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has reported that any move for Gyokeres would be in the summer, however, it is possible but not likely that he will be sold in January. It is also noted that his release clause is €100 million (£83 million), the Lisbon club would be open to offers from €70 million (£58 million) or more.
Writer’s View
Coventry City will be set for a very hefty cash windfall sooner or later. If working by the estimate of a 15% sell-on clause for the price Sporting are willing to negotiate at, it is likely that The Sky Blues will get around £8.75 million from Gyokeres before any fees are sent to Brighton. This is game-changing money for City and should certainly be invested into players that can get them back to competing for promotion to the Premier League.
