Carlisle United manager Mike Williamson has shared insights into the club’s ongoing preparations for the January transfer window.
Speaking ahead of the team’s pivotal clash with Crewe Alexandra, the head coach revealed that “pre-planning” is underway, with potential for both arrivals and departures at Brunton Park.
Williamson emphasised the importance of these discussions in shaping his squad as the Blues aim to climb the League Two table. Working closely with sporting director Rob Clarkson, the manager is keen to ensure that any decisions align with the club’s ambitions.
Player Movement Likely in January
Williamson acknowledged that frustrations over playing time are natural among professional footballers. While declining to name specific players, he confirmed that some squad members had approached him to discuss their lack of opportunities.
“All I can do is be as honest as I possibly can, and it’s been taken in the right way. I’m sure there’s going to be knocks at my door in terms of [players] frustrated with the game time [they are getting], and that’s a natural process,” Williamson said.
Sporting director Clarkson, who recently joined the club, is playing a key role in these plans. Williamson praised Clarkson’s immediate impact, highlighting his recruitment expertise and collaborative approach.
“His background in recruitment has already brought noticeable changes. He’s clear about what he likes and what he wants, and his strong opinions provide vital direction in our planning meetings,” the manager added.
Upcoming Clash Against Crewe
Carlisle’s preparations for Saturday’s early kick-off against high-flying Crewe Alexandra include a boost in personnel. Jordan Jones is set to return from injury, while Ben Barclay is back after serving a suspension. However, Jon Mellish will miss out due to a one-match ban.
The game offers Carlisle an opportunity to move out of the relegation zone, as rivals Swindon Town and Morecambe are both involved in FA Cup fixtures. A draw or win against third-placed Crewe could provide a crucial lift for Williamson’s side.
Writer’s View
Williamson’s transparent approach with players and collaboration with Clarkson reflects a well-organised effort to steer Carlisle United away from the relegation zone. With January fast approaching, the club’s ability to balance immediate needs and long-term goals will be pivotal. The upcoming clash against Crewe could offer an early indicator of the squad’s readiness to fight for safety.
