Cardiff City Boss Reflects on Struggles Following Defeat to QPR

Cardiff City interim manager Omer Riza admitted his side lacked a cutting edge after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to bottom-of-the-table QPR.

The Bluebirds failed to capitalise on their chance to climb the Championship standings, remaining perilously close to the relegation zone. Riza’s team has now lost three of their last four matches, leaving them one point above the drop zone. The loss marked Cardiff’s third in four winless games, casting doubt over Riza’s chances of securing the managerial role on a permanent basis.

“We Failed”: Riza’s Post-Match Reaction

Speaking after the match, Riza expressed frustration with his team’s performance, particularly their inability to convert opportunities.

“On this game we wouldn’t have scored until the cows come home, I think the saying is,” Riza said. “The belief was there to win the game, but it wouldn’t come and we come away highly frustrated. We knew we could have gone into 17th place and four points above it (relegation zone) but we have failed. We will keep on working and try to win games.”

Cardiff’s offensive struggles were evident throughout the match, with only sporadic moments of promise. Callum Robinson’s second-half header and Rubin Colwill’s low drive were met with fine saves from QPR goalkeeper Paul Nardi, adding to the home fans’ growing frustration.

Celar’s Redemption for QPR

For QPR, Slovenia striker Zan Celar finally broke his goal drought with a stunning brace. Celar’s first goal was a moment of brilliance as he controlled a headed pass, swivelled, and fired into the top corner. His second came in stoppage time, breaking clear of Cardiff’s defence to chip goalkeeper Jak Alnwick.

QPR manager Marti Cifuentes praised Celar’s resilience and the team’s collective effort in supporting the striker during his barren spell.

“The whole group have been protective and supportive to him. It’s very important he scores and we are happy for him. Hopefully, this will increase his confidence,” said Cifuentes. “He has shown today and in the past that he is an excellent finisher, and what we need to do as a team is provide him with more chances.”

QPR’s victory, their first since August, lifted them off the bottom of the table and within two points of Cardiff, further tightening the relegation battle.

Writer’s View

Cardiff’s inability to convert possession into goals remains a glaring issue. While Omer Riza’s early tenure showed promise, the team’s recent downturn highlights the challenges of competing in a relentless Championship season. Meanwhile, QPR’s win—and Celar’s moment of redemption—offers a timely reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in football.
