Candidate Meeting Emerges In Hull City Manager Hunt

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has reportedly met with a potential candidate as the club look to replace Tim Walter.

The German manager was sacked yesterday after a poor string of results, capped off by a loss at home to Sheffield Wednesday, left The Tigers in the relegation zone and the Turkish chairman no choice but to dismiss the former Hamburg man.

Ex-Blades Boss Meets With Ilicali

According to Sheffield Star and TalkSPORT reporter Alan Biggs, former Sheffield United manager Slavisa Jokanovic has met with Acun Ilicali in London today (Thursday, 28 November). The Serbian has plenty of experience in the Championship with United, Watford and Fulham and boasts a 51% win rate across his entire career.

With The Cottagers, the 56-year-old saved the club from relegation in 2016 and then quickly led the club up the ranks alongside compatriot Aleksandar Mitrovic, getting the club promoted through the playoffs over Aston Villa in 2018.

He was most recently in charge of Russian Premier League side Dynamo Moscow but was sacked towards the end of the season with the club in seventh place in the 2022/23 season.

Fellow TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook revealed earlier in the day that Jokanovic was a leading candidate for the vacancy in East Yorkshire. Alan Nixon did also report that former Coventry City boss Mark Robins was a contender to succeed Walter.

Writer’s View

It seems Hull City are moving quickly and Slavisa Jokanovic would be a good fit on paper. He has won promotion from the Championship twice with Watford and Fulham, matching Ilicali’s lofty ambitions for the club. His most recent job in Moscow is perhaps a slight stain on his CV but the Serbian’s record in the second tier is brilliant and would be a smart appointment should they opt for him. The task at hand now though is to steer the club clear of relegation and the decision they take needs to be correct as yet another botched appointment could spell disaster on Humberside.
