Sullay Kaikai’s superb header in the 89th minute salvaged a dramatic point for Cambridge United as they battled Bolton Wanderers to a 1-1 draw at the Abbey Stadium.
The result was even more remarkable as they spent much of the second half playing with ten men after Jubril Okedina was dismissed early in the second half.
Cambridge Start Bright but Face Early Obstacles
Cambridge began the match on the front foot, carving out two excellent chances within the opening minutes. Kaikai’s early shot was pushed away by Bolton goalkeeper Nathan Baxter, who then made another crucial save to deny Ryan Loft from close range after a Liam Bennett cross.
Bolton grew into the game and should have taken the lead before the interval. A defensive miscue from James Brophy gifted Jay Matete a chance, but the midfielder blazed his effort well over the crossbar, keeping the match level at half-time.
Drama Unfolds After the Break
Early in the second half, Cambridge’s task became significantly more difficult when Jubril Okedina was shown a red card for violent conduct. A clash with Bolton’s George Johnston during a corner saw Okedina dismissed, forcing Cambridge to regroup with 10 men.
Bolton capitalised on their numerical advantage shortly after. Danny Andrew lost possession in a dangerous area, allowing Aaron Collins to strike a low shot into the bottom corner past Vicente Reyes, despite the goalkeeper getting a touch.
Despite being a man down, Cambridge refused to back down. Danny Andrew, at fault for Bolton’s goal, redeemed himself with an excellent cross late in the match. Kaikai rose above the defence to direct a powerful header beyond Baxter, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Late Chances and Resilience
The closing minutes saw Cambridge push for a winner, with Rossi narrowly heading wide after a scramble in the Bolton box. The visitors, meanwhile, struggled to regain composure, with their earlier dominance fading under Cambridge’s relentless pressure.
The result leaves Cambridge encouraged by their fighting spirit, while Bolton will rue missed opportunities to take all three points.
Writer’s View
Cambridge displayed remarkable resilience to earn a point against a strong Bolton side, especially after going down to 10 men. Sullay Kaikai’s header was a fitting reward for their determination, while Bolton’s inability to manage the game after taking the lead will be a concern for Ian Evatt as they aim to stay competitive in League One.
