Shrewsbury Town head coach Gareth Ainsworth has pledged to remain true to his emotional and energetic approach as he navigates his new role.
The 51-year-old made an electrifying start to his tenure with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Birmingham City in his first match in charge.
Authenticity on the Touchline
Ainsworth, known for his passionate style, was visibly involved on the sidelines, celebrating every success and urging his players on with intensity. Reflecting on his touchline demeanour, Ainsworth stressed the importance of staying genuine.
“I’m an emotional guy,” Ainsworth said. “I will celebrate wins. Defeats will hit me hard. That’s the person I am, and I don’t mind saying that. The more I’ve managed, the more it comes out, and the more I’m proud to be who I am. The emotion at the end was genuine. That is all I can say. It was really a good moment.”
While he acknowledged that the road ahead will have its challenges, particularly with the squad’s limited depth, Ainsworth remains optimistic and focused on bringing joy to Shrewsbury fans.
John Marquis Praises New Leadership
Striker John Marquis, who played a pivotal role in the win with a goal and an assist, lauded Ainsworth’s clarity and enthusiasm. He credited the new head coach’s gameplan for their success against Birmingham City.
“He is very enthusiastic,” Marquis said. “He is very clear and concise with his message. We set up with a gameplan to be aggressive and press. Birmingham are a very good side, but they do get very open and expansive, and we felt with Blocko’s (Tom Bloxham) pace and my knowledge we were able to pick our moments to hurt them on the counterattack.”
The 32-year-old striker emphasised the team’s focus on the remaining fixtures, describing the campaign as a “mini 30-game season.” He expressed confidence in their ability to build on the weekend’s performance and execute Ainsworth’s vision moving forward.
Writer’s View
Gareth Ainsworth’s passionate start at Shrewsbury Town has clearly resonated with players and fans alike. His authenticity and tactical clarity provide a refreshing boost for the club, but the challenges of a small squad and the rigours of League One will test his resolve. The upcoming clash against Blackpool will offer another chance for Ainsworth to showcase his ability to inspire and lead Salop to greater heights.
