Cambridge United youngster Glenn McConnell has joined National League South side Chelmsford City on an initial 28-day loan deal.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has struggled for first-team opportunities this season, featuring just once in the EFL Trophy.
Returning to Familiar Territory
This is not McConnell’s first taste of action in the National League South. During the 2022/23 season, he had a productive spell at St Albans City, scoring five goals and contributing assists across 20 appearances. That campaign saw St Albans reach the play-off final, with McConnell playing a key role in their success.
Chelmsford City manager Robbie Simpson expressed his excitement about bringing McConnell to the Clarets. The former Cambridge forward revealed his long-standing admiration for the young talent.
“I’ve been a big admirer of Glenn for a while, going back a few years really to when we brought (former Cambridge youngster) Kai Yearn in on loan,” said Simpson. “Glenn was another in Kai Yearn’s team who we really liked… he had a great run at St Albans when they reached the play-off final, getting lots of goals and assists.”
Recovering from Injury
McConnell signed a new contract with Cambridge United in the summer, reflecting the club’s high hopes for his future. However, his progress was interrupted by an injury, which sidelined him for a significant period. Now fully fit, McConnell has been seeking game time to aid his development, and Chelmsford was quick to secure his services once he became available.
“As soon as we heard that Glenn was available, he was someone we showed interest in greatly,” Simpson added. “We’re really pleased that Cambridge and Glenn have chosen to come to us. We are really looking forward to seeing Glenn in a Clarets shirt.”
Debut and Upcoming Fixtures
McConnell made his debut for Chelmsford as a second-half substitute during their 1-1 draw against Worthing on Saturday. The Clarets, currently 16th in the National League South, will hope McConnell’s creativity can help improve their league position.
Next up for Chelmsford is a clash against Billericay Town in the Essex Senior Cup tomorrow night, where McConnell may get another opportunity to impress.
Writer’s View
Glenn McConnell’s loan move to Chelmsford City is a smart step for both the player and his parent club, Cambridge United. Regular football in the National League South will help McConnell regain match sharpness and continue his development. Chelmsford, meanwhile, gain a talented player capable of making an immediate impact.
