Sheffield Wednesday have provided a key injury update, with mixed news for Owls fans as defender Akin Famewo faces a lengthy recovery, while attacker Olaf Kobacki could return before the end of the year.
Manager Danny Röhl shared the latest updates over the weekend as the team continues to manage its squad through a challenging Championship season.
Famewo Out Until March
Akin Famewo, who started the 2024/25 season in superb form, has been ruled out until at least March. The 26-year-old, who had firmly established himself in the left centre-back role with commanding performances, sustained a serious muscle injury during the Owls’ away victory over Portsmouth earlier in the campaign.
Famewo’s rehabilitation is ongoing, but manager Röhl has acknowledged the defender still has “a long, long way” to go before being fit for action. The injury was a significant blow for both the player and the club, which has had to adapt defensively in his absence.
“I think with Akin the earliest point will be March,” Röhl told The Star. “And that’s a long, long way. We have to build him up and there’s a long way to go on that.”
Kobacki Nearing Return
In more positive news, Olaf Kobacki’s recovery from a muscle injury is progressing well, with the forward expected back before the year’s end. His return would be a welcome boost for Röhl’s side as they prepare for the busy holiday fixture schedule. Kobacki’s ability to contribute in the attacking third has been missed, and his comeback could add a much-needed edge to Wednesday’s forward line.
Additionally, the manager noted that players like Nathaniel Chalobah, Michael Ihiekwe, and Ben Hamer have rejoined the squad after their respective injuries. This growing pool of available players should offer Röhl more options as the team looks to climb the Championship table.
Writer’s View
Akin Famewo’s absence until March is a blow for Sheffield Wednesday, as his early-season form had marked him as one of the standout players in the squad. However, Olaf Kobacki’s imminent return offers a silver lining, with the attacker’s presence likely to strengthen their attacking options. Managing injuries has been a challenge for the Owls, but the return of other key players like Chalobah and Ihiekwe should help stabilise the squad during the crucial months ahead.
