Michael Skubala and his Lincoln City side are grappling with a string of injuries and suspensions as they prepare to face Wrexham in the Football League for the first time since 2008.
Injury and Suspension Woes
The Imps will be without several key players, including Tom Bayliss, Tom Hamer, and Tyler Walker, who are sidelined due to injury. Freddie Draper and Reeco Hackett also missed the last match, while Ben House is suspended after accumulating five yellow cards.
With a packed fixture list of Saturday-Tuesday matches, Skubala acknowledges the challenges of managing a depleted squad:
“When you have injuries, it’s always a challenging part of the year, especially during this period with games coming thick and fast. That’s the challenge of the job: how to field a team, whether to move players out of position because not everyone is fit or available to play,” he said in his pre-match press conference.
Opportunities Amidst the Challenges
Despite the absences, Skubala sees this as a chance for other players to make their mark. Dylan Duffy recently benefited from Reeco Hackett’s injury, while Bailey Cadamarteri is expected to start in place of the suspended Ben House.
“It can feel like a jigsaw sometimes, but that can be a good thing. It gives people opportunities. Sometimes, those opportunities come by choice from a manager, and other times, they’re forced. Then it’s about showing what you’re capable of and trying to keep your place in the team,” Skubala added.
Defensive Depth Tested
In defence, Adam Jackson could make his return after spending time back on the training pitch, but Skubala hinted he might not be rushed back into the starting lineup. With the availability of Paudie O’Connor, Lewis Montsma and Sean Roughan, Jackson may be on the bench and eased into action.
“Right now, we’re probably a little light in the defensive line with players like Jacko and Hamer out. Jacko’s close and in contention, but he might not be ready to start. So, we just have to work through that as a club,” Skubala noted.
Writer’s View
Lincoln City’s current injury and suspension crisis could serve as a pivotal moment for younger and fringe players to step into the spotlight. Skubala’s pragmatic approach and willingness to adapt his squad will be critical against a Wrexham side eager to prove themselves in the Football League. The outcome will likely hinge on how well these opportunities are seized by those stepping up.
