Sunderland are reportedly considering prematurely ending the loan move of goalkeeper Matty Young in the January transfer window.
The England youth international goalkeeper was sent to League Two side Salford City in the summer but has only played five times, all in cup competitions.
Black Cats Exploring New Options
According to reports from football journalist Alan Nixon, Regis Le Bris’ side are reportedly “reviewing” Young’s situation in Greater Manchester ahead of the winter transfer window opening and could choose to bring him back to the Stadium Of Light before a new loan move elsewhere.
Salford had no keepers in the squad following the end of last season and opted to sign the Sunderland academy player as well as former Wigan Athletic shot-stopper Jamie Jones, who has been Karl Robinson’s number-one choice in the fourth tier.
Young has still managed to fare well in his five appearances and earned a call-up to the England under-20 side at the age of 18. With his role as cup keeper, it is be expected that he will play in their FA Cup second-round match against Cheltenham Town next weekend. He had a fruitful spell with Darlington towards the end of last season and established himself as the number-one option for The Quakers with 14 appearances between February and the end of the campaign.
Writer’s View
Sunderland will always want the best for their players out on loan and with Salford City’s decision to make Jamie Jones the first choice, it is unlikely Matty Young will feature again for the club once they are knocked out of the FA Cup or reach January. The Wearside club have a proud history of developing goalkeeping talent and will seek for their 18-year-old prospect to get regular minutes where he plays. Whether they opt for a second League Two move or a step back down into the National League remains to be seen but this seems like a logical move if these reports are true.
