Peterborough United’s Bradley Ihionvien faces an extended period on the sidelines after scans revealed an unusual abnormality in his leg.
The striker, who joined the club from Colchester United during the summer transfer window, has endured a frustrating start to his Posh career, managing just five substitute appearances.
Freak Injury Halts Ihionvien’s Progress
Ihionvien marked his debut with a goal in an EFL Trophy win at Gillingham, but he suffered an injury during that game and has struggled to regain fitness since. A recent scan provided clarity on his condition, revealing unexpected complications that will keep the striker out of action for months.
“Bradley has suffered a freak injury,” said Posh manager Darren Ferguson. “They’ve found another bone has grown in his leg among other things, and he will need to stay off his feet for a couple of months.”
The injury is a blow for both Ihionvien and Peterborough, as the forward had been signed to bolster their attacking options. His absence compounds a difficult period for the player, who had shown glimpses of potential before his setback.
Who is Bradley Ihionvien?
The 20-year-old began his career at Colchester United, progressing through their academy to make his first-team debut on 7 May 2022 as a substitute in a 2–0 victory against Hartlepool United. Ihionvien made his full debut on 19 August 2023 in a 3–2 home loss to MK Dons.
During the 2023–24 season, he established himself in the team, making 34 appearances across all competitions and scoring five goals, contributing to Colchester’s successful battle against relegation. On 30 August 2024, Ihionvien signed a three-year contract with Peterborough United. He debuted for Peterborough on 3 September 2024, coming on as a substitute in an EFL Trophy match against Gillingham, where he also scored. His EFL League One debut followed on 14 September 2024 against Lincoln City.
Positive Updates on Other Injuries
Ferguson also provided updates on other players recovering from injuries. Jadel Katongo is expected to return for the FA Cup second-round match against Notts County on November 30. Meanwhile, Hector Kyprianou, Rio Adebisi, and Jed Steer are targeting a comeback for the League One derby against Northampton Town on December 9.
Despite the challenges, Ferguson remains optimistic about his squad’s ability to navigate the upcoming fixtures. The return of several key players will provide a timely boost as Posh continues their push in both the league and cup competitions.
Writer’s View
Bradley Ihionvien’s freak injury is an unfortunate setback for a young player aiming to make his mark at Peterborough United. While the news is disappointing, Ferguson’s updates on other players’ recoveries suggest the squad is well-positioned to handle the absence. For Ihionvien, patience and proper rehabilitation will be essential to ensure he returns stronger in the months ahead.
