Danny Cowley is targetting further signings in January to help Colchester United in their League Two battles.
The U’s brought 12 players in over the summer but so far they have not inspired the club to move up the table and are firmly in the bottom six of the fourth tier.
“We’re Clear”
A few injuries have plagued Colchester over the season so far, with Portsmouth loanee Anthony Scully being forced back to Fratton Park to sort an ankle issue and young talent Milton Oni was ruled out for the season with an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury.
Cowley told the Gazette that he knows what he wants in terms of players but did not reveal any information about potential signings.
“When the window shuts at the beginning of September, you’re straight away thinking about the next window, particularly where we are as a club and where we are, in terms of our development.
“We had the summer window and we know that for us to get to where we want to go, we have to use every opportunity.
“Of course in football, you can only recruit at two times in the year so these become very important periods.
“Of course, the January transfer window is notoriously more challenging than the summer windows. But we’re clear on what we need.
“We sold a lot of athleticism in the summer and picked up some injuries in Owura and Samson, Teddy who’s an athletic boy and young Milton so that’s hurt us, in terms of that attribute.
“We’re clear on what we need to do in January but like always, we have to make sure that we can work within the finances available.”
Writer’s View
Colchester United would have hoped they could have made improvements on last season’s performances but largely have matched where they were tipped to finish this season. Cowley will need to resolve issues such as bringing in new midfielders to cover for Anthony Scully and especially Milton Oni, who looked to be a revelation during the Essex club’s EFL Cup game over Brentford. A striker would also be a key area to build upon, following the last-minute sale of Bradley Ihionvien to Peterborough United. Ultimately the biggest factor for United is the budget they have available to them.
