Portsmouth Boss Targeting January Move For Exiled Forward

Portsmouth will once again look to find Anthony Scully a new club after the forward underwent surgery for an ankle issue.

The 25-year-old was forced to return from his loan at Colchester United after an issue arose surrounding metalwork in his ankle requiring surgery. Scully managed just nine games after reuniting with former Pompey and Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley in Essex.

Mousinho Looking For January Move

The Irish player has six months remaining on his contract at Fratton Park, having been told before the season that he has no future with the Championship club. He was brought to Portsmouth in 2023 ahead of their League One title-winning season but played just nine times for the club after tearing his meniscus and continued to pick up issues across the campaign.

Speaking to the Portsmouth News about his short-term future whilst he still has a contract in Hampshire, John Mousinho confirmed he would be searching for a new club for Scully to play for.

“Anthony is back and on Wednesday had surgery on his ankle after an injury he picked up when he was out on loan at Colchester.

“Although it’s an issue with his ankle that he’d had surgery on previously. He had a plate in there, which is getting removed. He will be about six weeks.

“Most likely we will look to get him out on loan in January, but the only important thing for us at the moment is Anthony’s health and making sure he’s back, fit and ready to go again.”

Writer’s View

Anthony Scully’s bad luck has continued but at least he will know what he can expect when he returns from fitness. It was unfortunate that he could not get a real chance at Colchester United with a manager he knows very well. It does feel though that not many teams will take a risk on him with the number of injuries he obtains in a season. Wherever he lands he needs to show he can still deliver like he did at Lincoln to try and secure a contract when his deal at Portsmouth expires in the summer.
