‘It’s Tough’ – Oxford United Man Reveals Championship Challenge

Ruben Rodrigues admits his rapid ascent from non-league football to competing in the Championship sometimes feels surreal.

The 28-year-old Portuguese midfielder has been a key player for Oxford United since joining the club last summer, continuing his impressive rise through the English football pyramid.

From Non-League Hero to Championship Regular

Rodrigues was instrumental in helping Notts County secure promotion from the National League during the 2022/23 season, scoring 19 goals and providing 15 assists. His performances earned him the fans’ player of the season award during his debut campaign, and he ended his stint with the Magpies with 54 goals, including a crucial strike in the play-off final against Chesterfield.

Reflecting on his journey, Rodrigues shared:

“Sometimes it’s surreal. Less than 18 months ago, I was in the National League, but it’s enjoyable. I’m out there playing against such good players, and sometimes it is really tough, but at the end of the day, I’m enjoying it. That’s what I’m trying to do. I’m trying to have fun and play the best that I can, and try and work hard for the team.”

Now in the Championship, Rodrigues has scored 11 goals in 59 league appearances for Oxford United. His contributions were vital in the club’s promotion from League One last season, including a standout brace in a thrilling 3-2 victory at Leyton Orient.

Adjusting to Championship Intensity

The step up from League One to the Championship has been a challenge Rodrigues has embraced. He highlighted the faster pace and stronger opponents as key differences, requiring him to refine his first touch and decision-making.

“You have less time, so you have to worry about your first touch. It has to be good, and you have to think about [what to do] before you get the ball. Everyone is a bit faster and stronger,” Rodrigues explained. His commitment to improving on the training ground has helped him adapt and thrive at this higher level.

Rodrigues has already made an impact this season, scoring against Bristol City and Luton Town. With his hard work and adaptability, he continues to prove his value as a Championship-calibre player.
