Coventry City Managerial Option Urged To Avoid Job

TalkSPORT pundit Rory Jennings has urged Ruud van Nistelrooy to avoid taking the Coventry City job and wait for a position in the Premier League.

The Sky Blues made the shock decision to part company with long-term manager Mark Robins earlier this month following a poor start to the season. This was despite the 54-year-old guiding the club from League Two to the brink of the Premier League during his seven-year stint in the West Midlands, whilst also losing in the FA Cup semi final on penalties to Manchester United last season.

Rhys Carr was placed in interim charge of the team following Robins’ exit. He secured an excellent 2-2 draw against league leaders Sunderland last weekend, although a permanent successor could be named before their next outing against Sheffield United next Saturday.

Who Next For Coventry City?

Frank Lampard remains the favourite for the job. although there are other names in the frame. It is believed that interim England boss Lee Carsley is under consideration whilst Ruud van Nistelrooy is said to have applied for the role.

The Dutchman is a free agent after leaving Manchester United last week following the appointment of Ruben Amorim. His stock has risen after he led his former team for four matches after Erik ten Hag was axed, picking up three wins and a draw from his four games in charge.

Van Nistelrooy Urged To Wait

Although van Nistelrooy has applied for the Coventry job, Rory Jennings believes he would be better placed waiting for a job in the Premier League. Speaking on his show on talkSPORT, he said:

“I can’t see a world where Ruud van Nistelrooy isn’t considered for a Premier League job. You can’t honestly believe that he’s going to dip into the Championship.

“I think West Ham is actually the perfect club. If you think about what West Ham fans are in need of at the moment.”

Jennings continued, explaining why West Ham would be the perfect job:

“I think Ruud van Nistelrooy is a tonic. Ruud van Nistelrooy is exactly what they were demanding.

“It’s the sort of appointment that West Ham fans not only demanded, but that West Ham fans deserved off the back of their protests about David Moyes leaving the club.”

Writer’s View

If Ruud van Nistelrooy is genuinely interested, Coventry should waste no time in making the appointment. He showed during his time at PSV Eindhoven that he is one of the brightest young managers in the game and his spell at former club Manchester United seemed to enhance that view. If they opt for someone else, they could live to regret it if he ends up in the Premier League or beyond.
