After what was a promising start to the season, Barrow have found themselves slipping further and further back over recent weeks.
Their latest blow came at home to AFC Wimbledon, with a quickfire double sealing the three points for the visitors and condemning The Bluebirds to a second loss in three league games.
Positivity Despite Downturn
Whilst they have gradually picked up points with three draws in their last five, the success of other teams has seen them slip out of the League Two top seven and fall down to 12th. The Dons’ win on Furness allowed them to leapfrog Stephen Clemence’s side.
The former Gillingham boss spoke candidly about this tough spell, insisting his team can persevere to the North-West Evening Mail.
“The only thing on these sort of runs is you have to keep working hard, you’ve got to stick together and that’s what we’ll do.
“I think the boys deserve a lot more points that we’ve picked up in the last five or six weeks if I’m honest.
“For whatever reason it hasn’t gone our way. We’ve got to make sure we start making it go our way. We can’t wait for it to happen.
“There’s going to be a lot of tight games in this division. We’ve got to make sure in these tight games, we’re the ones who come out on top.”
A big concern at the moment is the lack of available strikers, with Andy Dallas the only option available to Clemence at the weekend. Dom Telford should return soon from an illness but the rest of their forwards are on the physio’s bench.
They face free-scoring Chesterfield in their next game, with a win and results going their way enabling the club to return to the top seven on goal difference.
Writer’s View
It is very rare that a team will get everything going their way over a season and for Barrow right now is the best proof of that. They have been unlucky to be only down to one striker in their last game and their woes could continue against a very strong Chesterfield side. A League Two season can come down to fine margins and should Barrow narrowly miss out on the playoffs, akin to how they did last season under Pete Wild, this can be pointed to as the period that made the difference. This period is likely to be a blip though and soon enough they will be back to where they were in the early stages of the campaign.
