Bolton Wanderers Aim to Fix ‘Mental Fragility’ in Push for Consistency

Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt has vowed to uncover the reasons behind his team’s erratic form, which has been marred by heavy defeats this season.

Despite spells of strong performances, Wanderers’ campaign has been overshadowed by collapses such as the 4-0 home loss to Huddersfield Town and the 5-0 thrashing at Stockport County, leaving fans and players alike frustrated.

Addressing a Concerning Cycle

Evatt described a troubling pattern of inconsistency that has plagued Bolton over recent seasons. Speaking to The Bolton News, he emphasised the importance of addressing mental lapses and maintaining focus to prevent these costly dips in form:

“We have had that type of Stockport performance in us. It happened last season at times, it happened the season before at times, and it has happened twice this season. And whether it is mental fragility, switching off, a lack of focus – there is nobody who dives into these things more than me, and I am trying my absolute best alongside the rest of the staff to find a reason, and then a solution.”

Evatt acknowledged the fans’ frustration, as standout victories are often overshadowed by glaring defeats. Yet, he remains optimistic that improvements can be made, with key players like George Thomason, Carlos Mendes Gomes, Eoin Toal, and Kyle Dempsey set to return to training soon, bolstering the squad ahead of a busy winter schedule.

Crucial Fixtures Ahead

Bolton’s next five matches, starting with Blackpool at home, present an opportunity for the team to rebuild confidence and climb the League One table. Evatt is determined to end the cycle of inconsistency and establish a foundation for sustained success:

“The next five league games are all winnable and it starts with Blackpool at home. If we can go on a good run, get some bodies back, which is looking promising at the moment, there is no reason why we can’t fire ourselves by Christmas very close to that top two.”

However, the manager stressed that avoiding future “catastrophic failures” is crucial for any genuine promotion push. Maintaining consistency over the remaining 32 league games will be key to achieving their ambitions.

Writer’s View

Ian Evatt’s frustration is understandable given the high expectations for Bolton Wanderers this season. While injuries and occasional lapses have taken their toll, the squad has shown glimpses of its potential. Addressing the mental and tactical issues behind these heavy defeats is essential if Wanderers are to avoid falling further behind in the League One promotion race.
