Birmingham City are reportedly set to sanction a loan move away from the club for defender Dion Sanderson, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon.
Sanderson has fallen down the pecking order at St Andrew’s since the arrival of Chris Davies.
Who Is Dion Sanderson?
Sanderson is a 24-year-old former Blues captain who had two loan spells with the club from Wolverhampton Wanderersbefore signing for a fee of around £2 million.
He made 68 Championship appearances over the last two seasons and is closing in on 100 appearances for the club.
He lost the captaincy last season in another chapter of a tumultuous season for Birmingham and has spent the majority of this season on the bench.
Lack Of Game Time
Despite going into the summer as one of the only recognised centre-backs at the club, Sanderson has only started one league match this campaign and that was on the opening day against Reading.
The former Wolves man has played just two further League One minutes since the Reading match and has had to rely on the EFL Trophy and EFL Cup for time out on the pitch.
Manager Davies has used summer signings Den Davies and Christoph Klarer alongside Krystian Bielik in defence this season, relegating Sanderson to a watching brief.
Where Will Sanderson End Up?
Nixon reports that any move away is likely to be a temporary one and that Sanderson has admirers in the Championship.
It was also widely reported in the summer that there was interest from north of the border in the shape of Rangers. Whether or not their interest will be reignited in the winter window remains to be seen.
Writer’s View
It is no surprise that Sanderson is likely to be shipped out in January as he simply hasn’t been required so far this season.
He has proven himself to be a steady Championship performer and it is likely the second tier will be his destination come January.
