Plymouth Argyle Linked With January Move For European Youth International

Plymouth Argyle have been linked with a move for Swedish midfielder Fredrik Hammar this January.

The 23-year-old is a youth international and has previously played once in the FA Cup for Brentford before returning to his homeland. He currently plays for Hammarby in the top flight.

According to reports from Swedish outlet Aftonbladet, Wayne Rooney’s men have been monitoring the defensive midfielder over the summer and could potentially submit a bid for him in January.

Hammar played for his club 25 times in the Allsvenskan this season as his side finished second in the league, qualifying for European football in the process. He is under contract at the Stockholm-based club until 2027.

Aftonbladet also report that Hammar is open to a move to Devon, although other clubs in the Championship and from across Europe also interested.

He came through the academy at Brommapojkarna but would move to Akropolis IF. Brentford’s B team offered him an 18-month deal with an option for a further year, with his only appearance for The Bees coming in the FA Cup against Stoke City.

He moved to Hammarby and has been part of the main club since 2022.

Argyle are currently engaged in a relegation battle in the Championship but Wayne Rooney’s side have found enough points to be out of the bottom three by a point. They play Watford once the international break ends.

Plymouth Argyle will look to strengthen to stay in the Championship for a third season and seemingly it is in midfield where Wayne Rooney wants to strengthen. Adam Randell has been a solid option in midfield and Darko Gyabi has been recognised with a callup to the England Under 21’s. A move for a former Swedish youth international would continue to build a midfield of the future at Home Park and a great investment which could return a great amount with a sale.
