Former Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has taken an unexpected turn in his career, stepping into the world of international management with the Montserrat national team.
Bowyer, who launched his managerial journey with the Addicks, has found himself far from the English leagues as he guides Montserrat in the Caribbean.
A Journey from Charlton to the Caribbean
Bowyer, a former Premier League player with a career spanning West Ham, Leeds United, and Charlton, made his managerial debut with Charlton Athletic in 2018. During nearly three years at The Valley, he guided Charlton through League One and the Championship, building his reputation as a coach. His tenure ended in 2021 when he accepted a role at Birmingham City, but since leaving the Blues in 2022, Bowyer’s path took an unexpected twist with his appointment as head coach of Montserrat, currently ranked 180th in the FIFA world rankings.
In a recent interview on The Football News Show, Bowyer described the international role as “very good” and a “completely different” experience compared to his time managing in English football. The shift has involved considerable travel and adapting to new challenges, working with a mix of professional players from the English Football League and non-league players who balance their football careers with day jobs.
“It’s very good, something completely different,” Bowyer shared. “Obviously being in England, managing in the Championship and League One, this is completely different… there’s a lot of travelling, but you get to see different parts of the world. I just felt it was a difficult challenge.”
Bowyer’s responsibilities with Montserrat have included World Cup qualifiers, an aspect he highlighted as a significant draw to the role. His focus is not only on competition but on imparting his knowledge to players eager to improve, reflecting the influence of his own experience under respected managers throughout his playing and coaching career.
“The most important thing is you pass on your knowledge; that’s why I’m here,” Bowyer explained. “I was very fortunate as a player and a coach to work under good managers, and now I’m here to pass on my knowledge to a group of lads who want to learn and improve.”
Montserrat will resume their Concacaf Nations League campaign on Thursday, facing St Vincent and the Grenadines.
