Coventry City Closing In On Managerial Appointment

Coventry City are closing in on Mark Robins successor after they made the shock decision to part company with long-serving manager earlier this week.

The Sky Blues have enjoyed a resurgence in recent years under the stewardship of Robins, rising from League Two to the brink of the Premier League. The were just moments away from returning to the top tier for the first time since 2001 last year when they lost on penalties to Luton Town in the play-off final.

They followed that up last season with more penalty heartbreak, this time in the FA Cup semi final against 20-time English champions Manchester United. With all of those achievements in his locker, it’s fair to say that few saw his dismissal on the cards, despite Coventry’s poor start to the campaign.

Swift Appointment Incoming?

Coventry recovered from two goals down yesterday to secure a point against leaders Sunderland. They are not in action again until November 23rd due to the upcoming international break, where they could have their new manager in place.

Football Insider claimed yesterday that former Everton and Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is set to open talks with the East Midlands-based club. However, that news has now gathered steam, with The Mirror reporting that the 46-year-old is closing in on the position.

Lampard has been out of a job since leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of the 2022/23 season, where he had stepped in on an interim basis following the dismissal of Graham Potter. It was a stint in which he struggled, winning just one of his 11 games in charge.

His temporary reappointment at Chelsea had come as a shock, with it following his disappointing spell at Everton. The ex-England international left Goodison Park in January 2023 with the club embroiled in a fight to remain in the Premier League.

Writer’s View

Coventry seem keen to make a swift appointment to fill the void left by Mark Robins. The decision to sack the 54-year-old was an unpopular one with supporters and they made their voices heard at the Stadium of Light yesterday. Should Lampard secure the role, it will be interesting to see what the reaction is amongst the fans. After all, he has failed to achieve anything of note and arguably, his only successful managerial role was at Derby County between 2018 and 2019.
