Hull City midfielder Xavier Simons has made a statement with his recent form, scoring in consecutive games for the first time in his Tigers career.
Simons, who joined Hull City from Chelsea, hadn’t found the net in his first 25 appearances for the Tigers. But that changed with a powerful strike against Burnley, followed by the opener against Derby County at Pride Park. As Hull prepares for a crucial fixture against Portsmouth, Simons reflects on the thrill of finding his scoring form and the impact it could have on his fight for a place in the starting eleven.
Competition Heating Up in Hull’s Midfield
With new additions Oscar Zambrano, Gustavo Puerta, Fin Burns, Steven Alzate, and Marvin Mehlem joining the squad over the summer, Hull’s midfield has become one of the most competitive areas of the team. Simons, despite facing strong challenges, has featured in 10 of Hull’s 12 league games this season, a testament to his growth and adaptability. But he knows that adding goals to his game is essential to retain his spot.
“I mean, it was an amazing feeling getting the first one, at home in front of the fans, and then to score two in two is something that I wouldn’t have even dreamed of at the start of the week. My dad’s been on to me about scoring a goal or shooting on target, so I’ve been practising in training, and they’ve come off now in two games. It’s a great feeling.”
Simons acknowledged the importance of goal-scoring for his role in the team and praised his teammates for creating an environment of healthy competition.
“Oscar [Zambrano] is a great player, and so is Fin [Burns]. They both work so hard, as I do myself,” he said. “It’s great to have competition, and whoever has the shirt at the moment has to stay on form because someone else is always knocking on the door.”
Simons’ work ethic and drive to improve have clearly resonated with Walter, who has given the midfielder valuable game time this season. With Hull pushing for a rise up the Championship table, Simons’ ability to convert his chances could prove invaluable as the Tigers seek consistency.
Writer’s View
Xavier Simons’ recent performances reflect a player determined to elevate his game and cement his role in a fiercely contested midfield. His newfound scoring touch is timely, showing that he can contribute in critical moments and add depth to Hull’s attack. As Hull City continues to build under Tim Walter, Simons could become a pivotal player if he maintains this upward trajectory.
