Carlisle United board member Matt Spooner has revealed the hierarchy still fully backs Mike Williamson despite the club’s on-pitch performances.
The former MK Dons manager arrived at Brunton Park two months ago but has been up against it since in the job, with the club still in the League Two relegation zone. The Blues have taken just two points in their last seven games and their last win came against Swindon Town whilst caretaker manager Mark Birch was in the hotseat.
Board Keeping The Faith
Despite the discontent towards the manager over recent weeks, with the loss against Cheltenham Town seeing booing after the full-time whistle, United’s owners in the Piatak family still are happy with Williamson in charge.
Matt Spooner, who represents the Carlisle United Supporters’ Trust on one of the club’s boards, spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria about the current situation at the club and whether the ex-Gateshead boss had the backing of the higher-ups. (Quotes via News & Star)
“The owners, the board of directors…yes. We still believe that Mike Williamson is the correct person.
“And not just Mike – his team that he’s brought in are the correct people to take us on this journey that we’ve started to bring in a style of play that is sustainable, exciting for fans to watch, and will help us get success in not just this league but leagues above as well.
“As a club and as a director of the club and part owner, we cannot hide from the fact that the table is not good reading. [For] everyone at the club, the number one priority at the moment is to pick up points.”
Fans Still Showing In Numbers
Even with the form keeping them embedded in the division’s bottom two, the fans are still out in force, with the away end at their upcoming League Two matchup with Salford City sold out in two Saturday’s time.
They have the hurdle of Wigan Athletic up next, giving The Blues a reprieve from their league form to face the third-tier side in the FA Cup.
Writer’s View
On one hand, it would be silly to pull the plug on a change that would have taken some time to fully take hold at Carlisle United. Williamson has not been given a transfer window yet to get players that suit his style and results may pick up with those moves. However, the table makes for dire reading and results have to come sooner rather than later or this risk to put him in charge will have undoubtedly backfired.
