Former Stoke City Man linked With League One Role: Swindon Boss Also Mentioned

Gary Rowett is the bookies’ top choice to take over at struggling League One side Burton Albion, who currently sit at the bottom of the table.

The former Stoke City manager, who has been out of work for nearly a year, is reportedly a 4/1 frontrunner to replace Mark Robinson. Robinson recently parted ways with the Brewers after a string of poor results. Remarkably, Swindon Town’s under fire coach Mark Kennedy is also in the running.

Rowett, who began his managerial career at Burton back in 2012, had a successful spell that saw him build the foundation for his future career in management. After leaving Burton, he moved on to lead clubs like Birmingham City, Derby County, Stoke City, and most recently Millwall, where he guided them to Championship play-off contention.

Rowett has kept busy during his time away from the touchline by working as a pundit for Sky Sports and hosting his own podcast. However, speculation is mounting that a return to management could be on the cards, as Burton looks to turn their season around. Rowett is not the only name in the running; Gareth Ainsworth, previously of Queens Park Rangers, is second-favourite at 8/1, while Kennedy, Leam Richardson, and Darren Stride also feature prominently, all priced at 10/1.

Burton’s Struggles Continue Under New Ownership

Mark Robinson’s departure comes after a challenging start to the 2024/25 season, with Burton Albion winless in their first 11 league games. Appointed in June by the club’s new owners, the Nordic Football Group, Robinson took over from former Stoke City forward Martin Paterson, who had successfully guided the Brewers to safety the previous season. However, Burton’s current campaign has seen them struggle both defensively and offensively, scoring just 13 goals while conceding 24.

Sporting director Bendik Hareide acknowledged the tough decision to part ways with Robinson in a recent statement:

“We have to be objective with our decision-making, and we feel we have reached a point where a change is necessary to improve the team’s results. We believe we have a talented squad, and we remain committed to our football strategy. Now is the time to re-group and look to deliver a positive season for our fantastic supporters.”

With Burton desperately needing a change in fortunes, Rowett’s return to his former club could provide the fresh leadership required to steer the Brewers away from relegation.

Writer’s View

Gary Rowett’s return to management at Burton would be a poetic reunion, considering it was at this very club where he started his managerial career. His experience in the Championship, especially his ability to stabilize teams, makes him a solid candidate to guide Burton through this tough period.

Kennedy is more of a wild card, and that would seem a crazy decision, given how badly Swindon are doing. However, it may be that Kennedy’s failings at the County Ground are due to erratic ownership as much as his own shortcomings, and he could be in for an upward failing, like Neil Harris last season.
