Norwich City winger Christian Fassnacht has emerged as a transfer target for Swiss club Young Boys ahead of the January transfer window.
The 30-year-old, who has struggled for game time this season due to injury, could be on the move as his contract situation at Carrow Road remains uncertain.
Young Boys Eye Fassnacht Return
Fassnacht, who joined Norwich City in July 2023, is reportedly attracting interest from his former club Young Boys, according to a report by Berner Zeitung. The Swiss outfit, where Fassnacht enjoyed significant success, is said to be keen on bringing the winger back to Switzerland when the January window opens.
The winger has played just once this season, with his only appearance coming on the opening day against Oxford United. An Achilles injury has kept him sidelined ever since, raising questions about his long-term future at Norwich. The Canaries hold an option to extend his contract, which expires in June 2024, for another year, but it remains to be seen whether they will exercise that clause
Norwich Face a Decision on Fassnacht’s Future
Norwich City must decide whether Fassnacht will feature in their future plans. The Swiss winger was a regular last season under then-manager David Wagner, making 45 appearances and scoring six goals to help Norwich reach the Championship play-offs. However, their hopes of promotion were dashed by Leeds United in the semi-finals, and a new era has since begun under head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup.
Fassnacht’s injury problems, combined with a managerial change, leave his place in the team uncertain. Young Boys could provide an opportunity for a fresh start, but Norwich may still see value in keeping the experienced winger as they push for promotion this season. Offloading Fassnacht could also free up funds for new signings in the January transfer window.
The Canaries currently sit in seventh place in the Championship after a 1-1 draw with Stoke City over the weekend. They face Preston North End next as they aim to secure a play-off spot in what is expected to be a fiercely competitive campaign.
Writer’s View
Christian Fassnacht’s potential move back to Young Boys is understandable given his success there, but Norwich should weigh their options carefully. His experience could be crucial for the promotion push, especially if he returns to full fitness. However, if he’s not part of Thorup’s plans, a transfer would allow Norwich to reinvest in their squad for a stronger second half of the season.
