Watford Confirm Return For Popular Former Player

In a major boost for Watford fans, former Hornets defender Paul Robinson has returned to the club as assistant coach under Tom Cleverley.

Robinson officially joined the squad this morning, reuniting with the team where his football career first took flight. The Watford-born defender was seen at the club’s training ground last week, and even observed an in-house friendly, sparking speculation about his return, which has now been confirmed.

Robinson’s Watford Roots

A product of Watford’s youth system, Robinson was a key player for the Hornets during his career, making 228 appearances. His tough, no-nonsense style made him a fan favourite, and his role in Watford’s historic 1999 promotion to the Premier League remains one of his standout achievements. That 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers at Wembley was a defining moment for the club, and Robinson was integral to that success.

However, financial difficulties forced Watford to sell Robinson in 2003, and he made the switch to West Bromwich Albion. His time at The Hawthorns was equally impressive, with the left-back making 238 appearances, including nearly 100 in the Premier League. He also had stints at Bolton Wanderers, Leeds United, and Birmingham City, where he closed out his playing career.

In total, Robinson amassed nearly 750 senior appearances, scoring 18 goals across all clubs. His hard-hitting defensive play also saw him rack up 164 yellow cards and 10 red cards—stats that underline his aggressive yet effective approach to the game.

After retiring as a player, Robinson transitioned into coaching, serving under Gary Rowett at both Millwall and Birmingham City, but he has never hidden his desire to return to the club in a coaching capacity.

“Watford has always been my club, and it’s a dream to be back here helping Tom Cleverley and the team. I can’t wait to get started and give back to the club that gave me so much,” Robinson said after his appointment.

Robinson’s first test as assistant coach will come this Saturday when Watford face local rivals Luton Town—a match that promises to be a baptism of fire for the former defender.

Writer’s View

Robinson’s return to Watford is a move that will undoubtedly excite the fans. Known for his commitment and fierce loyalty, his deep ties to the club make him an excellent choice for assistant coach. With his wealth of experience both as a player and a coach, Robinson could be instrumental in helping Cleverley turn Watford’s fortunes around this season. His first challenge against Luton will be a stern test, but one that could mark the start of a promising chapter for the club.
