Cardiff City are considering sacking manager Erol Bulut after a poor start to the season, according to talkSPORT.
The Bluebirds currently lie bottom of the Championship with no wins in five games, with the hierarchy in South Wales reportedly weighing up a managerial change. The club have accumulated only one point so far this season after a late equaliser against bitter rivals Swansea City, and Bulut looks to be close to the sack at the Cardiff City Stadium as City look to resurrect their season.
That equaliser against Swansea is Cardiff’s only goal so far this season in the league, with eleven conceded, making it the club’s worst start to a campaign in 35 years. Sources close to talkSPORT say many senior players are now questioning Bulut’s capabilities for the job, and Bulut himself may be feeling the pressure, skipping media duties after his side’s loss against Derby County on Saturday.
Former Fenerbahce boss Bulut joined the club at the beginning of last season, with a fairly successful first year at the helm. Cardiff finished 12th in 2023-24, with various derby victories, leading to the German-born Turk receiving a new two-year deal in June. It’s now looking like Bulut will be released from his duties just months after signing that deal after drawn-out negotiations, leaving the Bluebirds potentially looking for another manager sooner than they were expecting.
Cardiff have had, on paper, a reasonably difficult start with matches against Sunderland and Burnley to kick off the campaign, but fixtures look to get harder in the coming weeks, which could influence a decision. Their next game is against Leeds United, and with the club needing to pick up points quickly, a decision may be taken sooner rather than later to get their season back on track.
Writer’s View
This will be disappointing for Cardiff, who had shown promise last season, and who tied Bulut to a new deal just this summer. However, it appears they have no other choice and that Bulut’s departure is just a matter of time. Form has been extremely poor and dhows no signs of turning round, so a new manager may be the only option to get the club up the table and out of the relegation zone, Furthermore, if it’s true that Bulut has lost the confidence of the players, this is often irretrievable, so change may be unavoidable at this stage.
