Burnley have completed the signing of centre-back John Egan following his recent trial with West Ham United.
Egan, 31, joins the Clarets on a deal that will keep him at Turf Moor until the end of the season. The Republic of Ireland international had been a free agent after his contract with Sheffield United expired in late June, leaving him to explore his next move. Egan had been training with Premier League side West Ham, but Burnley have moved quickly to snap up the experienced defender.
Speaking to Burnley’s official website, Egan expressed his excitement about the move: “First and foremost, I’m an ambitious person, an ambitious player and I feel like I’m at an ambitious club. The manager, staff and the players all want to be successful. I want to come in and add to that.”
Egan has been training with Burnley for several weeks and feels confident about fitting into the squad. “I’ve got to know the lads and really enjoyed working with them and the manager. I’ve had some really good conversations with him. It’s been an incredible environment to come into. I’m delighted to be a Burnley player now and I’m looking forward to the future.”
Burnley are currently sixth in the Championship, after a blistering start faltered a little before the international break. They lost numerous key players as the window slowly eased shut, including centre backs Dara O’Shea, Ameen Al-Dakhil and Luke McNally.
Who is John Egan?
Egan has established himself as a reliable centre-back throughout his career, which began in the youth ranks at Sunderland. Although he did not make a senior appearance for the Black Cats, he gained valuable experience through loan spells at clubs such as Crystal Palace, Sheffield United (during his first stint), Bradford City, and Gillingham. It was at Gillingham that Egan made his mark, becoming a key figure in their defence and earning a permanent move to Brentford.
At Brentford, Egan’s consistent performances in the Championship helped him stand out, and he became a regular starter for the club. After impressing with the Bees, he earned a move to Sheffield United, where he enjoyed significant success. Egan played a pivotal role in Sheffield United’s promotion to the Premier League and went on to make over 150 appearances for the club. He was instrumental in their strong defensive performances during their first season back in the top flight, helping the Blades secure a top-half finish.
On the international stage, Egan has represented the Republic of Ireland, making his senior debut in 2017. He has since become a regular for his country, adding to his reputation as a dependable defender.
Writer’s view
From Burnley’s perspective, the signing of John Egan looks like a smart move. They’ve secured an experienced defender with a wealth of Premier League and Championship experience at a time when their defensive frailties have been evident. Egan’s leadership qualities and know-how will be crucial as they look to stabilise and push up the table in the second half of the season.
For Egan, this move makes sense too. After leaving Sheffield United and weighing his options, joining a club like Burnley offers him the opportunity for regular football in the Premier League. It’s a great chance for him to prove his worth, especially after spending time training with West Ham without securing a contract. Both parties should benefit from this deal if he can stay fit and quickly adapt to Burnley’s style of play.
