Swansea City Sign International Goalkeeper

Swansea City have agreed a deal for former Glasgow Rangers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin, as reported by the Sunderland Echo.

McLaughlin’s contract with the Ibrox side ended after the conclusion of last season and he has put pen to paper on a deal until January with the Swans.

The 36-year-old made 10 league appearances for the Scottish giants last term as he provided backup to England international Jack Butland in the Rangers’ goal.

He joined Rangers in 2020 from Sunderland and was part of Steven Gerrard’s squad that prevented arch-rivals Celtic from winning ten league titles in a row, although he only appeared in 11 Scottish Premiership matches.

McLaughlin is a two-cap Scotland international and is vastly experienced, making over 400 league appearances for clubs such as Bradford City and Burton Albion.

With the injury to Andy Fisher, Swansea boss Luke Williams was on the lookout for an experienced backup to recent signing Lawrence Vigouroux.

Fisher had taken the step up from League One MK Dons to the Swansea.com Stadium in October 2020 and had looked to establish himself as the Welsh side’s number-one before the arrival of Carl Rushworth on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion meant a season on the bench.

The 26-year-old is expected to be out for a ‘lengthy spell’ following surgery on a groin injury picked up during a pre-season friendly against FC Koln. That left Williams with only Vigouroux and 22-year-old Nathan Broome as first-choice goalkeeping options so he has decided to act and add McLaughlin to his ranks.

Bringing in a player of McLaughlin’s experience on a short-term deal to act as cover is a shrewd move from manager Williams.

Lawrence Vigouroux started the season as number one and he will continue that role but to go with the inexperienced Broome as backup for several months may have been deemed a risk, hence the Scotland international’s signing.
