Carlisle United are reportedly considering former Mansfield Town manager David Flitcroft for their vacant sporting director role, as reported by Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.
The Cumbrian side, recently relegated to League Two, are looking to restructure their football operations following the departure of manager Paul Simpson. Flitcroft, who has also managed Barnsley, Bury, and Swindon Town, is seen as a strong candidate for the position.
Carlisle are keen to fill both the sporting director role and the managerial position to steer the club back to stability. According to reports, Flitcroft is being seriously considered for the sporting director job, just six months after leaving Port Vale, where fan sentiment had turned against him towards the end of his tenure.
Carlisle’s immediate challenge is to recover from their tough start in League Two, which included a 2-1 loss to Bradford City at the weekend. Bringing in an experienced figure like Flitcroft could provide the direction the club needs to improve its fortunes.

David Flitcroft had a solid career as a midfielder, primarily in the lower leagues of English football. He began his professional journey with Preston North End, debuting under Sam Allardyce. Flitcroft enjoyed a notable stint at Rochdale, where he made over 200 appearances and was named Player of the Year in 2002-03. He also had spells at Macclesfield Town and Bury before retiring in 2007 to pursue a coaching career.

That said, Carlisle fans didn’t exactly gel with David Holdsworth, another failed manager turned DoF who ended up leaving the club and not having his role replaced two years ago.

His ability to navigate the complexities of lower-league football and work within tight budgets could help the Cumbrians regain stability and ambition.
