Sheffield Wednesday are interested in a loan move for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, according to The Star.
The Owls are looking to strengthen in defensive midfield having had a busy summer thus far and seem to be looking to the loan market for players. One of the players on the loan market is Charles, who has been put up for a spell away by the newly promoted Saints.
Curiously, if the 20-year-old does make the move to Hillsborough, he would be reunited with his brother Pierce. The younger Charles, a goalkeeper, has made three appearances in South Yorkshire and is highly regarded at the club.
Like his brother, Charles grew up in Manchester and came through the academy at Premier League champions Manchester City. He made one top-flight appearance before his £15 million move to the South Coast and went on to play 32 Championship appearances in the 2023-24 season. Russell Martin’s club clearly don’t see him as part of their Premier League campaign this term, so a return to the Championship looks likely. As well as this club experience, Charles is also a full international. He has represented Northern Ireland up to senior level, where he has 17 caps, qualifying through his mother.
It’s been a mixed start to the season for Danny Rohl’s side, with a 4-0 victory in the league followed by a 4-0 defeat, as well as progression in the Carabao Cup. Despite signing ten players thus far, with many hitting the ground running, the club have clearly seen these inconsistent results and decided more change is needed. As well as his midfield role, Charles would be able to fill in various roles, so is likely to help the club by providing depth across the pitch.

This is a great deal for Wednesday, and Charles will help them no end. He would be gaining crucial minutes at a level where he is comfortable, and would likely be crucial to any future success, such is his versatility and ability to slot in anywhere. For the club, they have secured more depth for free and may be able to take him permanently if the move is a success. Overall, this is a quality move for both parties, and will likely see both progress throughout the season.
