West Bromwich Albion Working On Loan Deal For 12-Cap International

West Bromwich Albion are interested in securing a loan deal for Sassuolo midfielder Uros Racic according to the Express and Star.

The Baggies are looking for midfield reinforcements this summer following the departure of star player Okay Yokuslu. The Turkish international was influential in the Championship last season and the club need to replace his efforts, and Racic appears to have caught the eye. Racic would probably be a fairly like-for-like replacement, standing at six-foot-four and having an eye for a long-range goal. His best position is said to be, like Yokuslu, deeper in midfield, but he is comfortable both further forward and in central defence.

Racic started his career with Red Star Belgrade in his native Serbia, before securing a move to Spanish giants Valencia. He made 70 appearances at the Mestalla, proving to be more of a squad player at the club, alongside several loans. A move to his current club followed last summer, but Racic couldn’t prevent the Italian outfit from relegation to Serie B. With his parent club now out of the top-flight, both player and club are said to be looking for a temporary move.

As well as his club experience, Racic also has plenty of international football under his belt. The 26-year-old has represented his nation throughout the age groups up to senior level, with 12 caps to his name. Racic was part of Serbia’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but failed to make an appearance.

The midfielder would be West Brom’s ninth addition of the summer, and the third loanee to arrive at The Hawthorns. Carlos Corberan’s club will be hoping to build on last season’s play-off disappointment but will have to make do with loans and low-cost deals, with Racic fitting the bill as well as filling a clear gap in the squad.

The West Midlands outfit have started the 2024-25 campaign well despite a modest summer, lying towards the top of the table after an unbeaten start. Despite a convincing win and goalless draw in the league thus far, the Baggies did crash out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Fleetwood Town. The league, and promotion, are likely the main focus though, and if Racic comes in it will be with the clear aim of trying for promotion back to the Premier League.

Writer’s View

It’s been a difficult summer for West Brom with the departure of Okay Yokuslu; while Racic may not be as stylish of a player, he would certainly fill some of the gap in the middle of the park. He’s got bags of experience and would come in cheaply on loan so it’s risk free. Despite their struggles the Baggies have started well, so with reinforcements such as Racic, confidence could increase further as the club look to return to the promised land.
