Portsmouth Eyeing Permanent Move for Premier League Youngster

Portsmouth have shown an interest in signing Liverpool forward Harvey Blair, following Reading’s pursuit of the the 20-year-old earlier this summer.

Blair has attracted interest from across the English Football League and Portsmouth are the latest side to target the 20-year-old. As reported by David Lynch, Pompey is weighing up a move for Blair, while League One Reading also monitored the Liverpool forward earlier this summer.

Like other Liverpool youngsters, Blair has been given the green light to leave Anfield permanently during the 2024/25 summer transfer window. Blair rose through the Reds’ academy system after joining the club at under-12 level.

He impressed in the under-18 Premier League in 2022/23 by scoring 10 goals and assisting five, per Transfermarkt. However, his progress was disrupted last season due to a serious knee injury. As a result, he made just four Premier League 2 appearances in the 2023/24 campaign.

Portsmouth started the 2024/25 Championship season with back-to-back draws against Leeds (3-3) and Luton (0-0). The newly promoted South Coast outfit has signed nine new players this summer. But Head Coach John Mousinho recently revealed that the club are eyeing more additions before the window shuts, as reported by the BBC.

Meanwhile, Reading are restricted to signing free agents and loan players due to their current transfer embargo. However, manager Ruben Selles also told Reading Today that the Royals cannot complete any transfers until Dai Yongge’s takeover is complete.

Ultimately, Portsmouth remains in a strong position to move for Blair. Liverpool are seemingly willing to sell, or at least loan the forward and Reading’s former interest cooled due to their ongoing transfer restrictions.

The young forward would also be a low-cost deal if Pompey opted for a permanent deal. As per Transfermarkt, the 20-year-old is valued under £85,000. However, concerns may arise over Blair’s lack of first-team football. The Liverpool academy player has featured just once for the Reds’ senior team – a 55-minute outing against Preston North End in the 2021/22 EFL Cup.
