24-year-old midfielder Callum Wright is on the radar of League One outfit Lincoln City, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon page.
Wright is currently on the books of Plymouth Argyle, but Nixon claims the midfielder is being watched by Michael Skubala’s side. Wright has come off the bench twice for the Pilgrims this season, while he started their EFL Cup win against former side Cheltenham Town.
Wright was a youth at Tranmere, Blackburn and Everton before moving to Leicester City, where he penned a professional deal. He appeared regularly for their Under 21 side in the EFL Trophy, making 11 appearances across three seasons, scoring twice. While at Leicester, he was loaned to Cheltenham Town, whom he helped to promotion from League Two in 2020/21. They went back for him a year later, taking him into League One, where he impressed with 14 goal involvements. The Robins remained in the division against all odds, and Wright moved on.
He joined Blackpool in the Championship but struggled to force himself into the reckoning, starting five games in as many months. Plymouth then snapped him up, and he helped them get promoted, where they swapped places with Blackpool. He’s now played 52 times for Rooney’s side but has only started 18 league matches.
The Imps are already heavily loaded with midfielders, having signed Tom Bayliss, JJ McKiernan, Conor McGrandles and Dom Jeffries in the summer, as well as Jack Moylan in January. They’ve got off to an indifferent start, winning 3-2 at Burton on the season’s opening day, but losing 2-1 to Barnsley in their first home encounter of the campaign.

It’s hard to see the Imps following through on this, if indeed they are interested. They’ve got plenty of cover for the position Wright plays, with McKiernan and Bayliss the two main figures there. The Imps play a 3-5-2 formation, with Ethan Erhahon holding and any two from Jeffries, McGrandles, Moylan, McKiernan, Bayliss and Ethan Hamilton vying for the remaining two spots.
They may see another position as suiting Wright – they’re short a couple of wing-backs and he has played there on occasion, but it feels a lot like a square peg in a round hole, which the Imps are already struggling with. Jeffries, for instance, played right wing-back in their cup defeat against Harrogate.
The Imps do need new faces, but Erik Ring is being heavily linked, and he would be a more natural wing-back. They’re highly unlikely to sign a central midfielder, even if Wright would fit their style. He’s a good player, exciting in League One, but just not what Skubala needs right now.
