Newly promoted Premier League side Southampton are preparing a move for Norwich City winger Abu Kamara, according to Football Insider.
Saints are said to be preparing a move for the England under-20 international, but Norwich are reportedly reluctant to sell after being impressed with Kamara’s form at Portsmouth last campaign. The 21-year-old made 52 appearances at Pompey, scoring ten times as the club won the League One title.
Portsmouth fans had been hoping to keep the youngster for their first Championship campaign in over a decade, after he became a fan’s favourite in his time at Fratton Park. But his form seems to have earnt him a move up to the top-flight, and it will sting even more for Portsmouth supporters given that their arch-rivals are in for him.
A move would come as a blow to Canaries fans too, who had been hoping Kamara would finally break into the first team at Carrow Road in the coming season after only three appearances for their senior team. It looks to be a season of upheaval in Norfolk with a new manager in Johannes Hoff Thorup and a number of potential outgoings, with striker Adam Idah heavily linked with a move to Scottish giants Celtic. Should Kamara move as well, it would leave Hoff Thorup with work to do in the transfer window with the new season fast approaching.
If a move materialises, Kamara would become the latest EFL young player to make the switch to St Mary’s this summer. Ronnie Edwards and Nathan Wood have recently moved from Peterborough United and Swansea City respectively, and Saints fans will be hoping they will all be capable of making the step up as the club look for a positive top-flight return.

This would be disappointing for Norwich going into the new season, but they would likely get a tidy profit if a deal were made. Kamara is yet to break into their side and is still fairly young and unproven, so a move is a risk and a season in the Championship may be wiser than immediately skipping the division. Staying at Norwich may be a better career move for the player, but the pull of the Premier League is hard to turn down. Norwich will hold out for a deal they agree with though, so a move isn’t a foregone conclusion just yet.
