Free Agent Becomes Latest Blackburn Rovers Target

Recently released Andreas Weimann is the newest Blackburn Rovers target, as they look to find a replacement for the many departing attackers, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

John Eustace’s side narrowly avoided relegation last season with a 19th-placed finish, just three points above relegated Birmingham City. A Sammie Szmodics brace on the last day against champions Leicester City was enough to confirm their survival.

Despite a strong attacking force, the Rovers conceded 74 goals which was the third most in the league. However, their brilliant attack saw the club score 60 times, a tally much higher than their competitors around the bottom of the league. As a result, there has been interest in their front line.

Semir Telalovic has already departed to join SSV Ulm 1846, although his bit-part role in the squad means this will be less impactful. On the other hand, Sammie Szmodics is also linked with a move away. The 28-year-old was a revelation last campaign as he found the net 33 times in all competitions with four assists, his contribution playing a crucial part in the club’s survival.

In addition, Sam Gallagher is also a target of Championship rival Stoke City after the forward’s injury woes last season. The striker managed just over 1,700 minutes of action in the league with just three goals and assists. He was left out of a recent pre-season game against Wigan Athletic as the Potters try to broker a deal.

As for arrivals, the Lancashire-based side is yet to purchase a new striker. So far, left-winger Aodhan Doherty from Linfield and goalkeeper Jack Barrett from Everton are the only signings through the door.

Due to a new attacker being a necessary option, Andreas Weimann is the latest player linked with a move. The 32-year-old was released by Bristol City last season after a short-term loan at West Bromwich Albion. He managed two goals and two assists as the Baggies reached the play-offs.

Nixon has recently reported that Blackburn boss John Eustace is looking to bring the experienced forward in on trial. The 1995 Premier League champions play their final pre-season fixture this Friday when they take on Stockport County. It remains to be seen as to whether Weimann will be a part of the squad.

Writer’s View

This would a great signing for Blackburn ahead of a major Championship season. With the outgoing Szmodics and Gallagher, a replacement is key and will need to hit the ground running for John Eustace as his attack was vital in securing points last season.

Despite the Austrian’s great versatility, he is also flawed compared to others in his position. He is in the top 3% for being dispossessed and in the bottom 2% for passes into the penalty area. This suggests his qualities could be limited after a poor 2023/24 season.

The former Bristol City star was in the top 17% for assists last season and the top 24% for aerial duels won. Therefore, as a target man, he could be a great replacement for Gallagher. It would also be good business as he would be a free signing, meaning the fee for his predecessor could be utilised elsewhere.
