Leeds United Could Lose Another Key Player This Summer After Premier League Interest

Wilfried Gnonto is the latest Leeds United player to be targeted by Premier League opposition and despite limited minutes last season, the winger is still on the radar of Everton.

Daniel Farke’s side had a disappointing 2023/24 season as they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion. After failing to go straight back up many key figures of the squad will look to move on and play at a high standard. Some examples of this include Crysencio Summerville, Illan Meslier and Georginio Rutter, who are all touted for summer moves.

Aside from completing a deal for Joe Rodon, Leeds United have had a rough start to the transfer window, with rumours of more players heading for the exit door. Most notably, Archie Gray and Luis Sinisterra have left the club, leading to much less quality available for the upcoming campaign, while Glen Kamara is nearing a move to Ligue 1 outfit Rennes.

As for Everton, they finished 15th last season in the Premier League despite multiple-point deductions. They often relied on their strong defence which saw former Carlisle United defender Jarrad Branthwaite excel.

Their sturdy backline and poor attack are exemplified by Sean Dyche’s first-choice striker Dominic Calvert Lewin having just 0.21 expected goals per 90. Conversely, Jordan Pickford was able to reach 13 clean sheets for the season.

As a result of this lack of goal threat, links to the electrifying winger Gnonto have increased. In addition, the Toffees also sold Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa, meaning their need for a new attacker has risen amid pre-season friendlies coming up.

This led Fabrizio Romano to report that Everton have a genuine interest in the player and talks took place with his camp recently. He also understands that negotiations are underway on deal conditions. Gnonto is also said to be keen on the move with his ambition to play at the top level.

The winger was able to find the net nine times while recording three assists last season despite having played just over 1,600 minutes. He was also in the top 10% in the Championship for progressive carries and progressive passes, thus showing his direct nature.

This would be a great signing for Everton after a season where they lacked a creative spark to lead to goals. The Italy international has proved his qualities at a young age and will flourish under a manager and system that caters to his strengths.

As for Leeds United, this will add to their issues ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. They have lost many influential players from the past few seasons and are struggling to sign targets like Callum O’Hare. Therefore, could this be the beginning of a tough season for the West Yorkshire club?
