Leeds United are set to miss out on the signing of former Coventry City star Callum O’Hare as the attacking midfielder is closing in on a move to Sheffield United, according to the latest reports.
The Whites are expecting several attacking players to leave this summer as winger Crysencio Summerville has been linked with numerous teams in the Premier League and abroad, including Liverpool, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, while Wilfried Gnonto is also wanted by clubs in the top-flight and in Italy.
Head coach Daniel Farke has been keen to add some new players to his squad to ensure that his attack isn’t left bare-bone and one man who Leeds are reportedly keen to sign is O’Hare, who recently left the Coventry Building Society Arena as a free agent two weeks ago following the expiration of his contract.
Nevertheless, Farke’s side faced competition for his signature as Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United were also looking to acquire the 26-year-old and it seems as though the Blades are set to win the race. Tom Collomosse from The Daily Mail has revealed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that O’Hare is close to penning a four-year deal at Bramall Lane, having completed a medical earlier today.
Chris Wilder’s squad has been in dire need of repair as 13 players recently left the club as free agents, including captain John Egan and versatile midfielder Ben Osborn. Furthermore, Cameron Archer returned to Aston Villa after merely 12 months in South Yorkshire, while Vinicius Souza is wanted by London outfit Fulham, although Sheffield United are said to be holding out for a £30 million fee for the Brazilian.
The Blades have already acquired the signatures of Jamie Shackleton, who left Leeds United a fortnight ago, and ex-Norwich City fullback Sam McCallum. O’Hare will become the club’s third signing of the summer window.
Writer’s View
It seems strange that O’Hare has opted for a move to Sheffield United over Leeds United given the difficulties that the former are facing off the pitch amid ongoing takeover talks. The Whites are in a far better financial position to return to the Premier League next season than their bitter city rivals.
Nonetheless, perhaps the Solihull-born attacker feels that he has a better chance of being a regular first-team player at Bramall Lane than at Elland Road which would make sense given that Leeds have Joel Piroe and Georginio Rutter to play in the number ’10’ role. This is a very good signing for Sheffield United given he will be arriving on a free transfer, but he boasts a market value of £1.9 million, meaning the club could potentially sell him in the future for a seven-figure fee.
