Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah is set to move to Sheffield Wednesday following the expiration of his contract at The Hawthorns, according to reports.
The Chelsea academy graduate has been around the block in the EFL, previously playing on loan at clubs such as Watford, Nottingham Forest, Burnley, and Reading during his time with the Blues. However, Chalobah eventually ended up in the West Midlands with West Brom following a brief stint with Fulham.
The midfielder signed for the Baggies on an 18-month contract back in January 2023 which expired less than two weeks ago. Chalobah did make 49 appearances in all competitions under Carlos Corberan during his one-and-a-half-year stint at the club but failed to ever become a regular in the starting lineup.
Last season, the England international featured 37 times for West Bromwich Albion but played just 1,141 minutes in total. Overall, this averaged out at around roughly 30 minutes per game. When the opportunity came around to offer Chalobah a contract extension to remain on the books, the club declined and he became a free agent a fortnight ago.
However, he won’t be without a club for long. It was revealed by the Sheffield Star on Wednesday evening that Championship side Sheffield Wednesday are keen to bring Chalobah to Hillsborough this summer as head coach Danny Rohl is hoping to fill the void of a defensive midfielder in his side.
Now, The Athletic’s Adam Leventhal has added to this report, stating that Chalobah has agreed to move to the South Yorkshire outfit and will sign a two-year contract with the Owls. BBC reporter Rob Staton has backed this up, claiming that it is now a done deal between the two parties.

It is a shame that Chalobah never quite found his feet at West Bromwich Albion. Corberan already had a pretty stacked midfield, with both Okay Yokuslu and Alex Mowatt being his preferred double-pivot in front of the backline. Nevertheless, the former Premier League winner is good enough to play in the Championship and this seems like a positive move for him.
Perhaps West Brom will regret allowing Chalobah to leave. There have been rumours that Yokuslu is set for a return to Turkey after his country were dumped out of the European Championship. This could end up being an area that the Baggies need to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.
