Leicester City have joined the race to sign former MK Dons midfielder Matt O’Riley from Celtic, however, they will face fierce competition for the 23-year-old’s signature.
The midfielder began his career at Fulham; as he progressed through their academy. Despite impressing for the club’s youth teams, he would appear just once in the league. This would lead the youngster to reject a new contract and become a free agent in the summer of 2020.
After six months out, he would find a move to MK Dons in January 2021. The English-born player would excel in this tenure as he appeared over 50 times with 18 goal contributions.
The Danish international would then depart to Celtic as his £1.5 million release clause was met only 12 months later. Building on his time in League One, O’Riley would prove his brilliance north of the border as he achieved over 60 goals and assists from midfield.
This exceptional form has left many clubs interested in his services. Journalist Alan Nixon has reported that newly promoted Leicester City has joined the likes of Southampton, Leeds and Brighton in the race.
New Foxes boss Steve Cooper is said to want to add the classy star as a substitute for the outgoing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Nixon believes that the club see the midfielder as the player to replace the goals and assists from their academy graduate’s departure.
However, Celtic want £50 million. This is a fee that has put off Brighton and is currently keeping Southampton from landing one of Russell Martin’s dream targets. It would also cost Leicester more than what they made on Dewsbury-Hall’s move to Chelsea.
In addition, there were also reports suggesting that all English cubs could be outbid by Spanish giants Atletico Madrid. They are said to have been interested prior and could have the financial backing to complete the deal.

Whilst Leicester City do seem keen to sign the 23-year-old, the finances involved make it seem challenging to complete. Deals with Okoli, Golding and Fatawu will leave the club with limited funds to get a deal done. With Financial Fair Play also being an issue, a £50 million deal for anyone could be costly.
As for O’Riley, his quality and transfer market value exemplifies the importance of the English Football League. MK Dons were able to allow the youngster to rejuvenate his career and prove his qualities.
