Hull City Stance Emerges On Transfer Of Key Star

Hull City will only entertain a sale for winger Jaden Philogene this summer if they receive a significant fee and sell-on clause, according to Hull Live.

The 22-year-old has appeared on the radar of a host of Premier League clubs after starring at the MKM Stadium last season. He only made the switch East Yorkshire last summer from Aston Villa for a bargain fee of just £5 million. It proved to be a masterstroke, with the attacker scoring 12 times and grabbing six assists in 32 Championship appearances.

After just one season with the Tigers, it seems likely that an exit is on the cards. Newly promoted Ipswich Town are said to have launched a £30 million double-bid for both Philogene and his teammate Jacob Greaves. Furthermore, it is claimed that the Tractor Boys are growing increasingly confident of completing the deal.

This fee has been rubbished by Hull Live though. The local publication state that it would take a significant fee plus a large sell-on clause to land Philogene alone. Despite talks, a move to Portman Road isn’t signed and sealed just yet, with Crystal Palace and Everton maintaining ‘genuine interest’.

The trio aren’t the only ones that have been linked with the former Cardiff City loanee. Spanish giants Barcelona were said to be keen on a loan with an option to buy, although this wasn’t a route that Hull were willing to explore.

TEAMtalk also reported that Premier League giants Manchester United were keeping tabs on the situation. However, this too has been discredited.

Speaking to talkSPORT last month, owner Acun Ilicali addressed the situation, saying:

“In order to be more successful, how important is it to keep hold of Jaden Philogene?

“We know about interest from Everton and West Ham as well, is it true that Barcelona would like to sign him?”

“Yes, everything is true but if you ask me, I told our fans that I would sell nobody. My idea in football is not to make money, my idea in football is to make a strong and bigger club.

“To make a bigger club, sometimes if a player says I want to go, that’s a different case. For me, one player change is not the end of the world, but for any of my players, I never want to ruin their career or their mood by pushing them because of the contract that I have.

“In that case, if Jaden wants to move and he says he wants to go somewhere, this is not something that we can do too much because it is his life. I love all my boys, so I’m responsible for their career as well so they don’t need to play with us if they don’t want to play with us.”

Writer’s View

Although the public stance is that Philogene isn’t for sale, Hull do stand to make a huge profit after only signing the player 12 months ago. They are however well within their rights to demand what they want. He still has two years remaining on his current deal, although the Tigers do have the option to extend by an additional year.

Negotiating a sell-on clause was always to be expected. No disrespect to the likes of Ipswich, but the winger looks like he is going to the top. A big season in the Premier League could see him become a target of bigger clubs next summer, where his value could skyrocket.
