Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has made a new addition to his backroom team, bringing Niklas Lanwehr to the club from Germany, according to the latest reports.
Rohl has made waves since taking over from Xisco Munoz at Hillsborough back in October. When he arrived in South Yorkshire, the Owls were glued to the bottom of the Championship and it seemed as though pulling off a miraculous escape under an inexperienced head coach was outside the realm of possibility.
Yet, by the end of the campaign, the 34-year-old had managed to steer the ship to safety following a three-game winning streak to close out the season against Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn Rovers. In the end, Rohl’s men finished three points above safety – the miracle was complete.
Now, work has begun to strengthen the first-team squad to avoid a repeat of last season’s gruelling relegation dogfight. Although the transfer window has been for a little over two weeks, Sheffield Wednesday haven’t been messing around and have already secured the services of Max Lowe, Svante Ingelsson and Ben Hamer on free transfers while former Southampton fullback Yan Valery has moved to Hillsborough for an undisclosed fee from French outfit Angers.

Nevertheless, Rohl has also bolstered his backroom staff. Joe Crann in the Sheffield Star reported on Saturday afternoon that the German coach has brought his compatriot Lanwehr to the club as a new analyst. Lanwehr most recently worked with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga under Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, winning the UEFA Europa League in 2022 against Scottish giants Rangers. Crann has revealed that the 33-year-old will join Richard Stirrup and Liam Bracken as analysts behind the scenes.

This may not be the most exciting deal for Sheffield Wednesday fans as Lanwehr’s importance will not be particularly present on the pitch. However, for Rohl, Stirrup, Bracken, and the players, this could help massively, spreading the workload and adding a new set of eyes during the analysis process.
Rohl penned a new long-term contract to remain with the Yorkshire side after his heroics in the previous campaign and it is nice to see the club backing him with some extra faces behind the curtain.
