Bristol Rovers have announced the signing of Chippenham Town defender Dan Ellison on a two-year deal, according to the club’s official website.
Ellison had been heavily linked with a move away this window after impressing for the National League South outfit last term. At just 19-years-of-age, the defender is yet to have a taste of EFL football but has bundles of potential which should stand him in a good position now linking up with Bristol Rovers.
The centre-back would make 30 appearances for the Bluebirds in the National League South last season, 27 of those being starts and he truly had what can be described as a breakout season. His performances hadn’t gone unnoticed during the year either, with the youngster receiving a call up to the England ‘C’ squad for their game against Nepal in early May.
He seemed destined to land at an EFL side this summer, but there were questions as to who that would be, with a number of sides lining up for his signature. The Football Insider had reported that both Derby County as well as Sheffield Wednesday held an interest in the defender but it is the Gas who have prevailed.
With it not being too much of a geographical switch for Ellison, it’s a move which makes a lot of sense and given that Bristol Rovers are in the league below both the Rams and the Owls, they’re potentially the club where the youngster will get the most opportunities.
Speaking to club media after the signing of the teenager, manager Matt Taylor said:
“I am delighted to welcome Dan to Bristol Rovers. Dan has impressed on his journey in the National League so far and, at 19, has the potential to grow and develop even further.
“We are looking forward to working closely with Dan and helping him in his progression at the club. The local non league scene will also continue to be monitored closely as we look to grow links with all clubs near to the Bristol area.”
Writer’s View
It’s certainly a large step-up for Ellison, who will be an unknown quantity, but he’s displayed plenty of promise for Chippenham and has rightfully earned himself a move to the EFL in the form of Bristol Rovers.
Although Derby have missed out on the defender, it’s highly unlikely that he would’ve been near the first team anytime soon, especially given that they’re playing in the second tier next term. Consolidating themselves as a Championship outfit will be the main aim next season and perhaps the summer after they’ll look at bringing some ambitious youngsters for the long-term in.
