Sheffield Wednesday & QPR Interest In £1.8 Million-Rated Ace Played Down

Sheffield Wednesday and Queens Park Rangers are just two clubs who have registered interest in Rotherham United defender Cameron Humphrys, according to reports.

It was revealed by Football Insider two weeks ago that the Owls and QPR were keen on winning the race for the 25-year-old this summer but were joined by fellow Championship side Swansea City for the central defender.

Sheffield Wednesday Target “Won’t Come Cheap” This Summer

Despite Rotherham’s relegation to League One last season, after accumulating merely 27 points in 46 matches in the Championship, Humphreys was one of the Millers’ better performers, hence why there is a battle to keep him in England’s second tier next season.

Nevertheless, speaking on the rumoured interest from clubs in the division above, Rotherham boss Steve Evans admitted that he is not aware of any intrigue from Championship sides in the centre-half while cracking a wry joke at the expense of Sheffield Wednesday [quotes via the Rotherham Advertiser]:

“If he’s mentioned with Wednesday then I’m not surprised if he’s mentioned with Thursday and Friday as well.

“Cameron has been really good for me in the three games he’s played but we are not aware of any interest from any club.”

Humphreys still has twelve months remaining on his contract at the New York Stadium, while the defender boasts a market value of between £1-1.8 million, as per FootballTransfers. Any suitors will need to pay a handsome fee to acquire his signature this summer.

Writer’s View

It was not surprising when it emerged a fortnight ago that Sheffield Wednesday, Queens Park Rangers and Swansea were hoping to secure the services of Humphreys this summer as he seems to be too good to drop down to League One after some impressive displays last season in a sinking ship.
However, Evans is adamant that there has not been interest from these clubs. Nevertheless, the Scot is an experienced manager and there is a chance that he is publicly playing hardball in order to ensure that the club receive a higher fee for Humphreys over the coming months.
